Each day offered a perfect blend of awe-inspiring natural wonders and immersive local experiences, from the towering glaciers of Endicott Arm to the thrill of soaring down the World’s Longest Zipline at Icy Strait Point. The relaxed pace and thoughtful itinerary allowed us to fully enjoy the breathtaking landscapes and vibrant towns without feeling rushed, making this journey one of reflection and adventure.
Day 1: Departure from Vancouver
Our journey began in the vibrant city of Vancouver, where the excitement of embarking on an Alaskan cruise filled the air. The Celebrity Solstice stood ready at the port, a symbol of modern luxury and comfort for the week ahead. We arrived early to ensure a smooth check-in process and took some time to explore the ship’s many amenities before our 4 pm departure.
As the ship gently pulled away from the dock, we were greeted with panoramic views of Vancouver’s stunning skyline and the surrounding snow-capped mountains. The highlight of our departure was sailing beneath the iconic Lion’s Gate Bridge, a breathtaking moment that signified the true beginning of our adventure. Seeing the towering bridge pass overhead as we ventured into open waters was a beautiful sight, marking our journey northward toward Alaska’s pristine wilderness.
Our veranda stateroom quickly became a cherished retreat, offering us the chance to wrap ourselves in blankets and enjoy the fresh sea breeze with cups of hot chocolate in hand. The quiet peace of the open ocean, combined with the dramatic sunset, set the perfect tone for the week ahead. That evening, we enjoyed an exquisite meal in the Main Dining Room, where the attentive service and delicious cuisine introduced us to the luxury of life onboard. After dinner, we made our way to the Sunset Bar, where we watched the horizon glow as the sun dipped beneath the Pacific, signaling the perfect end to our first day.
Day 2: Cruising the Inside Passage
Our second day began with the serene beauty of cruising the Inside Passage, a day dedicated to soaking in the natural wonders of Alaska from the comfort of the Celebrity Solstice. The Inside Passage is famous for its calm waters, steep cliffs, and thick forests that stretch as far as the eye can see. From our veranda stateroom, we spent the morning watching towering waterfalls and mist-covered mountains pass by. With a cozy blanket and warm drinks, we felt connected to the rugged landscape in a way that was both peaceful and exhilarating.
Onboard, the day offered plenty of activities to enjoy. One highlight was the MacCallum Scotch Tasting Experience, a delightful and educational event that allowed us to sample some of the finest Scotch while learning about the history behind it. Later, we found ourselves at Cellar Masters, where we caught an NHL playoff game—bringing a fun sense of home to the high seas. The combination of thrilling views, luxurious relaxation, and the warmth of ship life made our day cruising the Inside Passage a highlight of the trip.
We also made time to explore the ship’s extensive amenities, from the tranquil Canyon Ranch Spa to the lively pool deck, all while keeping our eyes open for possible wildlife sightings. The crew ensured that our every need was met, making our sea day one of luxury and adventure.
Day 3: Icy Strait Point
Icy Strait Point was our first stop, and it didn’t disappoint. Known for its mix of adventure and culture, this port offered a day filled with excitement. We began with a scenic gondola ride up to the mountain summit, where we were greeted with panoramic views of the Alaskan wilderness. The highlight of the day was the World’s Longest Zipline—a thrilling 1.6-kilometer ride that reached speeds of nearly 100 km/h. The feeling of soaring down the mountainside, with breathtaking views all around, was an experience we won’t soon forget. The zipline was the perfect mix of adrenaline and awe as we took in the rugged landscape from a completely different perspective.
After the thrill of the zipline, we spent time exploring the local shops, where artisans displayed beautiful native art. The cultural richness of Icy Strait Point, with its deep ties to the indigenous communities, gave us a meaningful connection to the area. We purchased several pieces of native art as souvenirs, each representing a unique aspect of the local culture. The combination of adventure and cultural exploration made Icy Strait Point one of our favorite stops.
Day 4: Skagway
Skagway was a journey into Alaska’s gold rush past, and our day here was filled with both natural beauty and historical significance. We began our day with a tour to the Yukon Suspension Bridge, a thrilling experience that took us across a breathtaking valley. The views from the bridge were extraordinary, with rugged cliffs and rushing waters below us, providing a sense of adventure and serenity all at once.
Next, we boarded the famous White Pass Railroad, a marvel of engineering that took us on a scenic ride back to Skagway. The train wound its way through towering mountains, offering stunning views of the valley, waterfalls, and distant glaciers. Along the way, we were lucky enough to spot several bears, adding excitement to an already unforgettable day. Learning about the historical importance of this route, which once guided prospectors to the Klondike Gold Rush, gave us a deeper appreciation of Alaska’s rich past.
Returning to the quaint town of Skagway, we explored its charming streets, lined with wooden boardwalks and gold rush-era buildings. The combination of history, wildlife, and scenic beauty made Skagway a standout stop on our journey.
Day 5: Dawes Glacier/Endicott Arm & Juneau
This was one of the most anticipated days of our cruise, and it certainly delivered. We began by cruising through the spectacular Endicott Arm, a narrow fjord surrounded by towering cliffs and waterfalls. The scenery was nothing short of breathtaking as we approached the magnificent Dawes Glacier. From our veranda, we watched as the ship carefully navigated through ice-filled waters, bringing us closer to the glacier’s towering blue ice walls. The glacier creaked and groaned as it shifted, a reminder of the raw power of nature. It was an awe-inspiring experience, one that left us speechless.
Later in the day, we arrived in Juneau, Alaska’s capital. We spent our time exploring the charming downtown area, visiting local shops, and sampling the freshest seafood we’ve ever tasted. Juneau’s blend of natural beauty and small-town charm made for a relaxing and enjoyable day. As we strolled through the streets, we reflected on the incredible natural wonders we had witnessed that morning, making this day one of contrast and discovery.
Day 6: Ketchikan
Ketchikan welcomed us with record-breaking rainfall—over 3.5 inches in a single day! Although the rain kept us from exploring the town in depth, the Celebrity Solstice offered plenty of activities to keep us entertained. We took the opportunity to relax onboard and enjoy the ship’s luxurious amenities. Later in the day, we participated in the Hollywood Hot Glass class, where we had the chance to create our own glass art—a unique and creative souvenir from our trip. The class was both educational and fun, and we walked away with beautiful pieces to remind us of our time at sea.
As we enjoyed a cozy lunch in the Oceanview Café, we were treated to a special sight—a bald eagle soaring majestically just outside the ship. Despite the rainy weather, the day turned out to be memorable in its own way, thanks to the wonderful service and the incredible wildlife sighting. The combination of relaxation, learning, and a touch of nature made our day in Ketchikan enjoyable, even with the heavy rain.
Day 7: Cruising the Inside Passage
Our final full day at sea was a reflective one, as we once again cruised through the stunning Inside Passage. The dramatic cliffs, misty mountains, and serene waters provided the perfect backdrop for our last day aboard the Celebrity Solstice. We spent much of the day on our veranda, savoring the views and the peacefulness of the Alaskan wilderness. We were even spotted by our cousins as we passed by Campbell River, BC!
As the sun began to set, we gathered at the Sunset Bar for one last evening of watching the Alaskan skies. The vibrant colors of the sunset reflected off the water, providing the perfect ending to an unforgettable journey. This final evening was a time to reflect on all the incredible experiences we had shared, from thrilling adventures to quiet moments of awe in nature.
Day 8: Return to Vancouver
Our early morning return to Vancouver marked the end of our Alaskan adventure aboard the Celebrity Solstice, but we decided to make the most of our final day with a visit to the Vancouver Aquarium in Stanley Park. After days spent immersed in Alaska’s natural beauty, the aquarium offered a fitting way to reflect on the incredible marine life we’d witnessed along the coastline.
Inside, we marveled at the diversity of marine creatures. Each exhibit provided a deeper understanding of the ecosystems we had encountered during the cruise, bringing our journey full circle.
Visiting the aquarium gave us a thoughtful close to our trip, allowing us to slow down and reflect on the incredible landscapes, wildlife, and experiences we had enjoyed over the past week. As we made our way to the airport, we left Vancouver with hearts full of unforgettable memories from both the wilds of Alaska and our time in this beautiful city.
Reflections on the Trip
Looking back on our Alaska cruise aboard the Celebrity Solstice, it’s clear that this journey exceeded every expectation we had. Alaska’s wild, untamed beauty was present at every turn, from the towering glaciers and misty fjords to the charming towns steeped in history. Each port offered something unique, whether it was the adrenaline rush of ziplining at Icy Strait Point, the historical significance of Skagway’s White Pass Railroad, or the serene beauty of cruising past the Dawes Glacier. Every day felt like a new discovery, and the balance of thrilling adventures and peaceful moments made this trip truly unforgettable.
Our decision to stay in a veranda stateroom proved to be perfect for this itinerary. Being able to step outside and take in Alaska’s ever-changing landscapes from the comfort of our balcony, often with a hot drink in hand, made us feel connected to the nature surrounding us in a way that no other experience could.
The Celebrity Solstice also added to the magic of the trip. From the excellent dining options to the fun activities like the Hollywood Hot Glass class, the ship provided the perfect balance of relaxation and entertainment. The service onboard was exceptional, with every crew member going above and beyond to ensure we had a flawless experience.
As hosts, traveling with a group of fellow passengers added another layer of fulfillment to the trip. Guiding our guests through this incredible journey, offering advice and support along the way, allowed us to share the magic of Alaska with others.
In the end, this Alaskan adventure will remain one of our most cherished travel experiences. From the moment we sailed under the Lion’s Gate Bridge to our final sunset in the Inside Passage, Alaska left us in awe, and we can’t wait to return one day to explore even more of its wild beauty.
